CARD LEGALITY

Cards are meant to be played!

The motto of UFS Alpha is to experience the joy of the early Universal Fighting System days. This means several things. First off, we want to play the cards we love but also we want balanced and interactive decks with as much diversity as possible.

We all know some of the cards were printed suffering from power creep and, therefore, breaking the balance of the format back then. For this reason, some kind of control method should be put in place, facing Evil in all its splendour was hardly fun for anyone, 4x Higher Calibur, 4x Addes Syndicate anyone? huh?

We are fundamentally against banning, unless it is strictly necessary. Cards are meant to be played! Additionally, the bans back then were thought to balance out the Standard format they were proposing.

UFS Alpha is slightly different given its card pool is kinda unique. It is mostly Legacy from 2010 ,which was barely supported anyway.

With this in mind we propose the following deck construction constraints:

  • Banned cards: these cards cannot be included in any way in your deck. We want this list to be short and reserved for cards that do not bring much to the game but, on the contrary, they create really unfun scenarios.

  • Legendary cards: legendary cards are really powerful cards, but also we’d like to think about them as cards that are not seen often, they are Legends in the end! However, they can support certain strategies at a given point in the game. To this end, Legendary cards are subject to the following rules:

    • You can play one, and only one legendary card in your deck. This means that if you decide to play, say, Happy Holidays, you can only play one copy and you cannot play any copies of any other legendary card.

    • Legendary cards cannot be removed from the removed from the game pile.

    • Legendary cards cannot be copied or have their text copied.

    • Whenever you remove a legendary attack from your card pool it is removed from the game, regardless whether it dealt damage or not.

    • Whenever you remove a legendary action from your card pool it is removed from the game.

    • Whenever a legendary asset, foundation or character leave the staging area for any reason, they are removed from the game.

    • Legendary characters cannot be chosen as starting characters, but can be stacked normally.

Legendary Cards List:

Both the Banned cards list and the Legendary cards list will be under regular review to maintain the fun and balance of UFS Alpha.

Watch list:

For the sake of transparency we decided to share with you the cards we are closely monitoring at the moment. Some of those have the potential of creating not really fun experiences and that's something we would like to oversee and act upon if that is the case moving forward.

The cards below can be played freely but they are the most likely candidates to some sort of status change (e.g. to Legendary) or errata in the future if things get out of hand.

Additionally, all cards in the Legendary cards lists are prone to be moved to the Banned list if things get out of hand.

Errata:

We recommend to use only the following errata and play the rest of the cards as they are written to avoid potential confusion and encourage diversity.

Some cards we consider adding an errata in the future if things get out of control:

Besides that, we use the current updated rules in the official Jasco website. You can find the rulebook in our links page.
